Abstract

Horehound (Marrubium vulgare L.) is native to Mediterranean Sea shore, but can be also found as a road-side weed. In Poland it is cultivated. The essential oil contributes to diastolic, expectorating, and blood-vessel dilatingactions. The presented study aims at evaluating the qualitative and quantitative composition of essential oil from horehound herb depending on plantation age and raw material harvest date. The oil was obtained by steam distillation and subsequently its composition was analysed using the GC/MS method. In south-eastern Poland, the main components of essential oil from Marrubium vulgare L. are: E-caryophyllene, β-copaene, and D-germacrene (oil from annual plants) and  E-caryophyllene and D-germacrene (oil from biennial plants).
