Codependency - "family common drink"

Abstract

Alcohol abuse by a family member destabilizes its operation, causes problems and is the cause of suffering, especially children. People from immediate environment seek alternatives  allowing for solving stressful situation and achieving stability. Addiction is strong; it causes the addict to focus only on alcohol and withdraw from their social roles. Among those closest – it causes commitment and willingness to help. Codependency is not a disease, but a syndrome of inappropriate adaptation to the new situation. By focusing on finding ways of reducing drinking, the codependent subject unconsciously assumes responsibility and control over the life of the drinker, becoming an unwitting participant in the whole "disease process". This scientific article presents a case study of an addict and functioning of the family.
