Evaluation the risk of development of mobile phone addition among physiotherapy students

Introduction. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to new addictions, which were related to the current civilization, technology advances, different inventions and changes to customs.
Aim. The assessment of the role paid by mobile phone in student life, the evaluation of the risk of development of mobile phone addition among physiotherapy students.
Material and methods. The study comprised 118 physiotehtrapy students and used a questionnaire consiting of three parts: first – for all respondents, the remaining two parts were designed for mobile phone users.
Results. All of 118 physiotherapy students had mobile phones. Almost 81.4% of the respondents had one mobile phone,used for 5 - 10 years - 97.9%. Most respondents - 72.9% , were convinced that mobile phone facilitates them the contact with people. Among the students -35.6% were convinced about the harmful effects of mobile phone, without regard to age. Most respondents (71.2%) declared that sometimes there were situations, they felt irritated or embarrassed due to the behaviour of the owners of mobile phones.The use of mobile phone and the related high costs were not the cause of confusion among 71.2% of respondents. Most respondents said that the mobile phone should be switched off at the theatre (62.4%), at the church (64.4%), and at the cinema (62.7%). Nearly 69.5% of respondents were convinced that people can become addicted to mobile phones, and 23.7% of students knew nomophobia definition. Mobile phone was most frequently used for communicating, texting, and as a watch (83.1%). Almost 84.8% of students had never switched off their phones. The analysis of mobile phone-addition test revealed that more than 69.5% of respondents used it in the correct way. All in all, 18.6% of students had symptoms of mobile phone–addiction.
Conclusions: Most physiotherapy students have known that mobile phone can produce harmful effects and they can become addicted to mobile phones. Mobile phones are mostly used for talking, texting, and as watches. Most students have never switched off theirs phones.
