Abstract

THE ROLE OF MINDFULNESS IN CONTEMPORARY NURSING EDUCATION IN THE EXISTENTIAL-ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE

Introduction. One of the significant problems in nursing education is students’ distraction, impatience, haste, tension, anxiety, racing thoughts and often a lack of engagement in the learning process. There are many causes for this state of affairs. A considerable contribution to students’ lack of focus is also made by the spirit of the times, which popularizes and legitimizes a certain way of being and thinking based on the idea of fluidity, speed, rootlessness and instant gratification. Various causes of distraction can be partially prevented by mindfulness.

Aim. The aim of the article is to show the educational benefits that practicing mindfulness provides and to present an outline of the mindfulness exercise. its purpose is also to articulate the importance of mindfulness for quality of life and for deepening humanistic sensitivity, which will in the future impact work in the area of patient care.

Material and methods. The phenomenological method in the approach  of Edmund Husserl was used to describe the phenomenon of mindfulness.

Conclusions. Mindfulness promotes critical reflection, restores control over emotions, prevents mood swings and loss of resilience. Moreover, mindfulness should be incorporated into the education system at the academic level.
