Abstract

Introduction. In the present world, psychological depressive and anxiety disorders appear very often and are serious health problem in small towns of Poland as well as in Europe.

Aim. Getting familiar with the knowledge and describing the awareness of citizens of small town of the depression disorders and ways of preventing them.

Material and methods. The research was conducted in the group of 100 people of both sexes at the age of 20-60 years. Diagnostic opinion poll was used as a research method.

The results. Majority of respondents (72%) are subjects who deal with people suffering from depression. More than half of the respondents (52%) think that depression disorders develop only among adults. The examined group as a whole thinks that depression is a disease, which is neglected, especially by primary health doctors. They also claim that depression as a disease is considered as embarrassing in a local society.

Conclusion. The knowledge and awareness of citizens of small towns in the area of general problem of depression is growing, however the awareness of its prevention is still very low.
