Abstract

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL PERFORMANCE LIVER TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS

Introdaction. Illness and healing process are one of the most important elements affecting perception of human’s life quality. This important factor significantly affects  patient's subjective perception of the impact of the disease and its treatment on performance and overall life satisfaction.
Transplantation is certainly an excellent form of treatment, however there is no guarantee of one hundred percent healing. This method is related with: need to comply with many rules, prolonged hospitalization, permanent contacts with medical personnel, rigorous pharmacotherapy and specific behavior in everyday life. Therefore, this type of treatment requires patient's full acceptance, discipline and cooperation. Its effect has a direct impact on the quality of recipient’s life.

Aim. The aim of this study was to assess recipients’ performance before and after transplantation in the physical and psychological area.

Material and methods. Using a questionnaire survey 123 patients were examined after liver transplantation. Questions were related to physical, mental and social performance before and after the transplantation.

Results. After surgery mobility was improved. Restrictions related to treatment were significantly more often suffered before the surgery. Symptoms of liver disease, hospitalization and performed studies frequency were less noticed after surgery. Satisfaction, joy, happiness were more often noticed after the surgery than before.
Liver transplant recipients returned to family and social life, but only a minor percentage returned to work.

Conclusions. Daily physical and mental performance was significantly improved after the surgery. Liver transplantation recipients’ physical performance was not limited. Transplantation has a positive effect on mental performance and increases people’s participation in social and family life.
