Retrospective analysis of parity and its impacton maternal and neonatal outcomes in term birth

RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF PARITY AND ITS IMPACT ON MATERNAL AND NEONATAL OUTCOMES IN TERM BIRTH
Aim. The relationship between parity and pregnancy outcomes remains a relevant subject, as a woman’s obstetric history affects the assessment of risks associated with subsequent pregnancies and potential threats to the life and health of the mother and her child. The aim of the study was to analyse the relationships between parity and selected maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with term birth.
Material and methods. This retrospective study was conducted between January 2017 and December 2021 using medical records from St. Sophia’s Specialist Hospital in Warsaw (Poland). We analysed 26862 cases of term births in the study period.
Results. A higher odds ratio of thromboprophylaxis (OR=1.13), pre-eclampsia (OR=3.12), gestational hypertension (OR=1.58), hypothyroidism (OR=1.24), anaemia (OR=1.73), and intrauterine growth restriction (OR=1.93) was observed in primiparas giving birth at term. Multiparas significantly more frequently gave birth in a birthing centre, via vaginal delivery, and experienced perineal tears (p<0.05).
Conclusions. In this study, primiparous women more frequently experienced selected periparturient complications and medical interventions during labour than multiparous women. Further studies, particularly those including adjusted analyses, are needed to better understand the observed differences and their clinical significance.
