Abstract

Research on deficits in social cognition has recently become an important area of investigation in schizophrenia. Emotion perception is one of the most frequently investigated components of social cognition.
Numerous studies have shown impairment in recognition of emotions in individuals suffering from schizophrenia. This paper reviews the literature on deficits in emotion perception in schizophrenic patients, with particular focus on the potential impact of this phenomenon on the risk of psychiatric rehospitalization. No studies reporting a direct link between deficits in emotion perception and a risk of psychiatric readmission in patients suffering from schizophrenia were found in the literature searched for the purposes of this review. However, a great number of studies have demonstrated a relationship between deficits in emotion identification and other symptoms of schizophrenia, the negative symptoms in particular. An association between outcome, social functioning and deficits in emotion perception has also been observed. Links between impairment in recognition of emotions, a risk of aggressive behaviour and psychiatric rehospitalization in schizophrenic patients suggest a promising research direction that merits further exploration.
In conclusion, there is a need of further research on the issue of the deficit in emotion perception and its effect on the picture, course and prognosis of schizophrenia.
