Mental disorders in the course of neoplasms

In the course of neoplastic disease in patients mental adaptation disorders can appear, being the response to the situation of severe disease and also as a result of pathological changes which are caused in organism by progressive degenerative process. Some patients suffer from mental disorders which exist irrespective of tumour. However in most of them these disturbances are related with oncological factors. Mental disorders which most often appear in the course of neoplasms are: depression and anxiety disorders, also disorders of consciousness, psychoorganic and psychotic disorders. Pathological psychic symptoms manifested by patients hamper communication between the patient and the doctor and also limit the ill person's possibilities to express own needs and describe pain. Moreover in case of brain tumours, psychic symptoms often appear before focal neurological symptoms. Therefore it's very important to diagnose them early in oncological patients and initiate suitable pharmacological therapy and psychological support.
