Od prekursorskiej pracy Robert E. L. Farisa i H. Warren Dunhama na temat występowania chorób psychicznych w obszarach miasta (Chicago) minęło już 75 lat. Autorzy potwierdzili przewagę występowania schizofrenii w centrum miasta, zwłaszcza w obszarach zdekapitalizowanych. Kontynuatorzy tego typu badań stawiali dalsze pytania i hipotezy badawcze dotyczące badanej populacji osób z chorobami psychicznymi w badanych obszarach miast i wsi. Coraz doskonalsze metody badawcze i statystyczne pozwalały na łączenie ze sobą różnych charakterystyk zarówno badanych populacji, jak i obszarów. W Polsce pierwsze tego typu badania dotyczyły chorobowości psychiatrycznej w poszczególnych dzielnicach miasta Łodzi na podstawie danych o pacjentach leczonych psychiatrycznie w po-radniach zdrowia psychicznego w 1981 roku. Autorka tych badań, Elżbieta Kozanecka-Michałowska, potwierdziła częstsze występowanie chorób psychicznych w Śródmieściu i w dzielnicach osiedlowych charakteryzujących się większą gęstością zaludnienia. Współautor bieżącej pracy poglądowej prowadził zbliżone tematem badania w oparciu o rejestr pacjentów leczonych psychiatrycznie stacjonarnie w latach 1989-2002. Obecna praca poglądowa, prawdopodobnie pierwsza w polskim piśmiennictwie specjalistycznym, ma na celu przybliżenie polskiemu czytelnikowi przeglądu wyników badań nad występowaniem schizofrenii w wydzielonych obszarach miejskich, także w odniesieniu do obszarów wiejskich.
